8/25/2023 0 Comments Lyrical dance vs contemporarySimilar dance steps may be used in both styles but it is the way in which they are sequenced, performed, and matched with sound and music that can make them different. Whereas contemporary dance distorts ballet technique, is generally avant-garde, and is dancer-centric, with a focus on the choreography or a theme, idea, or concept. Dance Technique & World Dance High School Differences Between: Lyrical vs. Lyrical dance is fluid and dynamic, it should follow and match the tone of the song and lyrics being danced to and is emotionally expressive. It is also important to understand that there IS a difference between Lyrical and Contemporary dance, especially for those entering competitions. Contemporary is often a blending of Ballet & Modern and I feel its based on showcasing the choreographers personal voice. Technique and amalgamation of both disciplines need to be mastered so that the dancer can concentrate on emotionally performing the steps rather than on their execution. Lyrical dance is generally an addition to the ballet or jazz dancers’ arsenal. Lyrical dance is a category typically found in dance. The style combines ballet technique with the freedom and musicality of jazz and contemporary. Some notable dancers and choreographers in the lyrical dance world include Suzi Taylor, Tracie Stanfield, and Brian Friedman. There can be conceptual work in it as well as a whole performance. Contemporary can be more of a natural movement and tenchnique based. Poses showing off dancers’ flexibility and strength are held as long as possible, jumps are high and explosive and turns are fluid and melt into the next. The words Modern and Contemporary mean basically the same thing: now. Contemporary and Lyrical dance are sub sets of the Jazz dance genre. In universities, Contemporary is also nothing like lyrical, another notion suggested by the myriad comparisons of the two styles that are floating around the internet. According to me, lyrical is more like dancing to the lyrics of the song or using lyrics to create steps.
